Imagine Tottenham’s food scene without the domination of chicken and chips? OK, so we’re not quite there yet, but the battle lines have been drawn and a new alternative is taking a stand.
The Banc Brasserie launch, back in November, saw Labour councillors and MPs congratulate Tottenham business partners Jan and Fabio on the opening of their second restaurant in the West Green Road neighbourhood.
West Green Road was recently a 2015 runner-up for the Rising Star High Street award. It is becoming one of Tottenham’s fave hotspots, and has seen a drastic change not only in its structure but people and eateries alike.
If you’re old enough to remember the name Langham School then your memories of the heart of the area – the green – probably recollect a seedy vibe. But the since-pedestrianised old gardening storage unit on West Green Road has now been transformed into a modern-day brasserie that locals, joggers, yummy mummies and workers can enjoy.
Reminiscent of Newington Green, Hackney’s borderline Islington spill-over, it now boasts pricey pads and continental cafes, bringing a desirable aspirational feel just like its N1 counterpart.
Local lads Jan and Fabio have taken on the challenge of running two eateries in the same vicinity: The Banc across the way, which use to be a Barclays Bank, and their latest venture The Banc Brasserie.
Having grown up in the area and attended what is now Park View Academy, they’ve seen more than a few changes in the West Green neighbourhood. From the looks of things, they’ll be prime witnesses to the next phase of change, too.
Tottenham MP David Lammy, who has been heading the regeneration of the area since the 2011 Tottenham riots, claims its potential has always been here.
“Growing up around Downhills, I remember that this area had a lot of vibes, a lot of energy, and was very entrepreneurial with the migration of Cypriots in the area. That fell away but is now making a comeback.”
Lammy continues, “It’s great that these two local lads grew up in the area as they understand local people and I believe that’s a good thing.”
Jan insists that “the people of Tottenham are not interested in overpriced branded chain coffee, but a more personal experience which caters to the locals’ needs and offers a healthier alternative. The Banc Brasserie provides a hub for those looking to escape for a quick bite, hot coffee or takeaway.”
The influx of professional people and young families alongside established residents can all take advantage of a cosy upmarket atmosphere, with pretty modern decor and even an outside shisha area.
Egg Florentine, Benedict and Royale are served from 8am to midday daily, along with Full English, Continental and veggie breakfasts. There is also a selection of sandwiches, bagels and warm wraps – you can even create your own. With roast rib-eye, pulled lamb and fishfingers among the filling choices, the menu boasts an affordable tasty option to the standard fried food.
With investment in the area on the up, this should see more businesses in the West Green neighbourhood bringing custom and credibility alike. Solicitors Kilic & Kilic have set up their services along West Green Road and have already enjoyed the Banc restaurants on both sides of the green. “We love eating at both of their establishments. In fact, it was Jan and Fab who encouraged us to move to the area and our staff love the healthy option on offer. Good food, great guys, we’re here to stay.”
Their investment in the area reflects their passion for Tottenham. Why move anywhere else when the opportunity to invest locally is presented?
Edmonton Labour MP Kate Osamor, who also grew up in the local constituency, agrees that better options is a step in the right direction. “What this means for the people of Tottenham is that if you open a business in the area, people will support it. This investment by the boys in this part of Tottenham shows their commitment and we must support that. Plus, residents need to know that their custom will be respected here.”
