Craving Coffee is an Independent Coffee company based in Tottenham, built in a former warehouse-loading bay, run by locals Matt and Rachel Ho. Serving speciality coffee, this is one of Tottenham’s many hidden gems.
How did Craving Coffee get started in the current space?
We started looking at sites for our home base in 2013 (including the Old Fire Station where Chicken Town now reside) until we found the right space for us. We were introduced to the Mill Co Project through the council as they were looking for someone to set up a cafe at their Gaunson House site. We loved the space and the collaboration with a creative community. We opened there in September 2014.
What changes have you seen in the local area since you started this up?
Obviously there are lot more people moving into the area who might have moved to places like Hackney a few years ago. On a personal note, we’ve made a lot more friends locally, and have more community with people who live in the area old and new.
There seems to be quite a bit of controversy over gentrification in Tottenham with all the regeneration plans, how do you feel about this?
This is a tricky one, as it’s hard to please everyone, especially in such a diverse and passionate area. There’s lots of stuff happening that we appreciate, places to go and socialise and spend our time and money in the area rather than having to leave Tottenham. We have a positive attitude towards what’s happening in our local area.
How is Tottenham’s artistic crowd evolving?
We’ve met so many incredibly talented, professional artists working on a world stage across many mediums. This fosters a culture of creativity and the sense of being part of something bigger than yourself.
What’s your favourite thing about Tottenham?
The people and it’s diversity, and their passion for the local area.
What’s the perfect accompaniment with coffee?
Jammy Val’s Salted Caramel. It’s addictive.
Being from Australia, how do coffee shops in the UK compare?
The coffee industry in London compares very well with Australia. We have a great coffee scene, it’s very easy to find good coffee and people who are passionate about the craft.
How do you take your coffee?
Depends on the time of day and mood. Start of the day is usually a flat white or latte, then maybe a black filter or piccolo in the afternoon. Plus the occasional traditional cappuccino. No sugar.
