Commuters making their way home from Seven Sisters Station may have been lucky enough to witness Haringey’s newest piece of satirical graffiti as a work in progress.
The hooded artist worked quickly and calmly in the dying light of early evening, despite a gathering crowd. As much of the piece as possible was kept covered until the whole work was finished.
The mural is signed ‘Loretto’. It is up for debate whether this is the identity of the artist, who has built up quite a portfolio of social commentary pieces across London, including one in Clapham which features a similar control screen design to this one.
Whether you think it astute or sexist, it may well haved saved more than one person’s bacon on 14th February, if spotting the brightly coloured bouquet reminded them to pick up a token of affection for their loved one before they got home.
Two other local murals, ‘No Ball Games’ on the Tottenham High Road and ‘Slave Labour’ in Wood Green, were believed to be by revered satirical street artist Banksy. They were removed and sold in 2012 and 2013, despite protests by locals. Another piece of stencilled artwork, ‘This is not a Banksy’, is still to be found a little farther down Seven Sisters Road.
