Franz Kugler was a keen entrepreneur. Recognising the growing popularity of cycling in post Great War Germany, he set about contriving a cycle route leading straight from Munich to his bar, the Kugleralm, some 12 miles from the city.
Seizing upon this golden opportunity, Herr Kugler felt assured of a prosperous summer.
Little did he know that one fateful day in June, the bar would be beset by no fewer than thirteen thousand cyclists, all with an unslakable thirst.
Demanding as they did, beers all round, the publican soon found himself perilously close to running out of brew.
Thinking quickly, Kugler mixed the remaining beer with a lemon soft drink and inadvertently invented shandy’s cousin, ‘Radler’, named in German for the cyclists who first sampled it.
Snatching the last of the sun before winter sets in, I invite you to revisit the overlooked, with a shandy fit for a King.
Comprising of homemade ‘Nam’ade (Tottenham’s finest lemonade) and locally brewed Redemption beers, I’m certain you’ll enjoy it, 12 mile cycle optional.
If the sun holds out a little longer, perhaps you’ll have time to try another summer staple.
Tottenham’s take on the sangria, uses Turkish apricot jam, gin, guava juice and budget rosė, topped off with our homemade citrus fizz. This recipe is guaranteed to rewind your summer, so you can start the cycle all over again.
Cyclist’s Shandy
- ‘Nam’ade – Juice of 9 lemons, 3 limes and 1 pink grapefruit. 3/4 as much caster sugar by volume. Heat the juice gently in a pan without boiling, reduce by half, add the sugar and stir gently until all dissolved, cool and add to sparkling water to taste.
- ⅓ Redemption Hopspur,
- 1/3 Redemption Trinity
- 1/3 ‘Nam’ade
Pink Sangria
- 1 part Apricot gin (3 heaped tablespoons good apricot preserve and 350ml Gin, blend and stand for 30 mins before straining.)
- 1 part Guava juice
- 4 parts Rose wine – we used budget Grenache
- Top w/ Nam’ade
- Ice and thinly sliced fruit – peaches are good
